Dr. Cowan is a Chicagoan through-and-through. He was born and raised in Chicago and even as a child knew he wanted to be a doctor. He attended Lincoln Park High School in the Advanced Placement Math/Science program. Then he went to Northeastern Illinois University for a BA which included emphases in Pre-Medicine, Psychology, and Mathematics.
Dr. Cowan earned his medical degree at the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine. While in medical school he was Vice-President of his class and volunteered as a Spanish translator in the Clinic For The Uninsured.
During medical school Dr. Cowan was married and recently celebrated his 14th anniversary. His wife works as a teacher in the Chicago Pubilc Schools and they have an 12 year old son. Dr. Cowan is also active as an Elder in his church.
After medical school, Dr. Cowan did his residency at Cook County Hospital. Dr. Cowan describes his experinces by saying, "Sending a new medical school graduate to Cook County Hospital is like throwing a child into the lake to learn how to swim. But those who survive have learned from the best." Dr. Cowan credits Cook County Hospital with teaching him how to treat patients and not just their medical problems.
Immediately after Residency Dr. Cowan started working at Chatham Foot Specialists. He quickly learned how wonderful the patients of the Chatham/Avalon area are. Like Dr. Cowan, these patients typify the smart, relaxed, and friendly attitude that Chicago is famous for.
